The three main types at a glance

At Nelson de Vloerenspecialist we get this question almost daily: "Which floor should I choose?" Honest answer: that depends on your situation, space, budget and taste. But we can help you on your way.

PVC: the all-rounder

PVC has become hugely popular in recent years. It is water-resistant, hard-wearing, suitable for underfloor heating and packed with design choices. For families with children or dogs, for kitchens and bathrooms, and for people who appreciate the ease of simple maintenance. PVC is almost always a good match.

Difference between click and dryback: click PVC is quicker to install and can go on an underlay, dryback is glued and gives the sleekest end result, ideal with underfloor heating.

Laminate: friendly priced, very practical

Laminate is the budget-friendly alternative with a beautiful wood look. Thanks to modern printing techniques, the difference from real wood is barely visible from a metre away. Suitable for living rooms, bedrooms and offices. Not recommended for wet rooms.

Always check the usage class with laminate: class 32 is suitable for living spaces with normal use, class 33 for intensive household use or light commercial use.

Parquet: timeless and unique

Parquet is the premium choice. Real wooden planks, oak, walnut, cherry or ash, that become more beautiful year after year. Sandable, repairable, and with the right care lasting for generations. Perfect for those who love character and are willing to invest a bit more.

For patterns like herringbone or Hungarian point, parquet is really the only logical choice, although PVC herringbone can be a good alternative for those who want the pattern without the wood maintenance.

A quick decision tree

  • Choose PVC if: family with children or dogs, water resistance is a must, underfloor heating present, low maintenance desired.
  • Choose laminate if: budget matters, the room gets normal use, no wet rooms, quick installation desired.
  • Choose parquet if: long-term investment, premium appearance, unique patterns, and it is a living room or representative space.
